Description
Magic, danger, and adventure abound for messenger Karigan G'ladheon in the fifth book in Kristen Britain's New York Times-bestselling Green Rider fantasy series Karigan G’ladheon is a Green Rider—a seasoned member of the elite messenger corps of King Zachary of Sacoridia. King Zachary sends Karigan and a contingent of Sacoridians beyond the edges of his nation, into the mysterious Blackveil Forest, which has been tainted with dark magic by a twisted immortal spirit named Mornhavon the Black. In a magical confrontation against Mornhavon, Karigan is jolted out of Blackveil Forest and wakes in darkness. She’s lying on smooth, cold stone, but as she reaches out, she realizes that the stone is not just beneath her, but above and around her as well. She’s landed in a sealed stone sarcophagus, some unknown tomb, and the air is becoming thin. Is this to be her end? If she escapes, where will she find herself? Is she still in the world she remembers, or has the magical explosion transported her somewhere completely different? To find out, she must first win free of her prison— before it becomes her grave. And should she succeed, will she be walking straight into a trap created by Mornhavon himself?

Let me start out by saying that this book is very different than the rest of the series. Not only is the setting radically different, but Karigan is a bit different as well. This book seemed to frustrate quite a few people because, due to the setting, it didn't really progress the original story much. Without adding any spoilers, let's just say that this book is really wonderful if you go in expecting something that is nothing like the rest of the series and you keep your mind open. Now, I am about to add a few SPOILERS, so don't read past this is you wouldn't like to hear something that may ruin it all for you!--------------Now, the biggest thing about this book that upset me was the fact that Karigan, once again, gets completely screwed in the romance department. I mean the girl just can't catch a break! She loves the king, who she can never really have. Alton loves her but she is too stuck on Zachary, then when she decides to be fickle and try things with Alton, he's fallen for her best friend. Yates also has a thing for her but she doesn't reciprocate, and even if she eventually could have, he dies and shuts down that possibility. Then she finally finds Cade, someone she loves and who loves her back, who is good for her, and it can't be because he can't go back to her time period with her. OMG, I was SO MAD. I knew it would happen, as I'd accidentally read a review that had a vague reference to the tragic end of the romance (and didn't even warn there may be spoilers), but that didn't make me any less disappointed. I mean, come on, give the girl a freaking break! I'm so tired of having romances and consequent happiness dangled before her just to be taken away. I want poor Karigan to have a happily ever after. Is that too much to ask? Plus, I'm tired of her and Zachary. I'm relieved the whole remembering Cade thing may have been the thing to make her move on from Zachary. Even though I honestly don't read this series for the romance, that is something I'd love to have included. I hope in the next book (pray it won't take her another 3+ years to finish writing that one) she finds someone great and is able to stick with them.Honestly, that was the only big thing I didn't not like about this book. Endings like that tend to ruin a whole book for me, but I didn't let it with this one. I enjoyed the characters and the setting in this book, and even the story twist. I'm curious how things will go with Amberhill in the next book. I'm also curious to see what they'll do with this whole mirror eye thing with Karigan. Where is that going? I'm eager to get back into the original storyline, but I did enjoy this little random veering off from it.I would definitely recommend this whole series to anyone and I still love it and will probably buy the next one as soon as it comes out, just like I did with this one (even if, like this one, it has disappointed reviews). :)
