I couldn't put this novel down. It encapsulates the atmosphere of 1968 mainly in New York City through the characters running a "Time Life" type of magazine, with personalities in and out of the office. The generations running the magazine battle each other on a professional level that spills over to the personal, which is problematically also reversed. It is essentially a historical novel, even though written not long after the turbulent events and struggles of 1968, with its assassinations and power struggles - old (even dying) versus young (even sexually liberated); left-wing idealists versus cops in brutal Chicago; establishment rules versus individual development. The writing is fluent and colorful and the dialogues loud and clear. The painful changes of the century's (and certain characters') middle age are with us to this day and the book should be mandatory reading for everyone interested in American history of the 20th Century!
