Dr. Michael Fleming is a person who spends a lot of time observing, because it is part of his personality – he tells us this in the Foreword of his new book. His talent at this grew during his medical training. His observational skills were then finely honed over a period of decades spent practicing as an excellent family physician. Finally, his natural ability has become focused even more astutely since he has become a believer in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. Because of that last, life-changing event, the most important one of all, we as readers are given spiritual insights to treasure, most notably in the section entitled, “In His Word.” The other stories in "In a Mirror Dimly" are also excellent, especially if you’re a person like me who isn’t very good at observing others. The “people” stories and the “doctor” stories are insightful and often hilarious(see “The Bell). And sometimes even Michael misses some important observations(see “Her Words, His Plan), which allows us to identify with him. Then there are the “Sally” stories about her illness, with insights and openness which deeply touch our hearts. Read this book for fun first. But then read it again more closely, so that the deep lessons which the author has learned can be transferred into your own life.May God bless you, Michael, for sharing your heart with us, and may He keep you close to Himself in the coming years. Oh, and we need more of these stories – please keep writing!
