Cathedral are, in my view, the best doom metal band out there, and I lament their disbanding at the end of the touring cycle for their final album "The Last Spire". So heavy are (were) Cathedral that Tony Iommi played on one album. "Ethereal Mirror" was the second album after the classic debut "Forest of Equilibrium". Here, the band broke into some faster tempos, but not too fast, and crafted a great album full of crushing riffs and surprising some with their musicality, too. Lee Dorrian is a fine vocalist for this type of metal, and can sing clean and tunefully when he wishes. The whole album is a piece of metal brilliance that in its original time of release was far and above anything else, wiping up the floor with grunge and remaining one of the true metal bands of the nineties. The secret weapon is the insanely terrific guitarist Gary Jennings, a criminally overlooked guitar god who is the rightful heir to the Sabbath throne. Doom bands abound, but none come close to what defines this darkest of metal compared to Cathedral. Electric Wizard are heavy, but Jus Osborne is no match for Jennings, and he probably acknowledges as much. Pay no attention to reviews who don't like the "experimenting". These types are intolerant of anything that expands musical territory, thanks to myopic record companies who have the artistic sense of a moth. You want heavy, get anything from Cathedral and laugh at the posers. Here's hoping Jennings starts another band. He's too good not to be heard.
