This is the most original band I've heard in a long time. It's true they project more than a little of Yes (which is a blessed thing) and perhaps also a twinge of bands like King Crimson and even Mahavishnu during certain passages. The stylings of mandolin/ keyboard/ violinist Raven Bush create a unique overall quality in this band. All four guys play (or sing) exceptionally well but I am most wowed by Liam (on guitar and lead vocal) and Raven. This is not to undersell very fine drum and bass work though these could be a bit cleaner in the mix (particularly the snare). Most impressive is their use of chords and time signatures which are very unusual in rock.... odd time signatures which are by no means gimmicky but rather sound like organic & natural elements in the songs.... Maj 7, Maj 7(#11), inverted 7(#9) aka Min7(+3), Sus 4, non-tonic bass notes and other lovely harmonic devices. This is a quartet with far FAR more sophistication in music theory than most rockers. They have drunk deeply from the well of the best creative music of the last 50 years and the music reflects that work. Of the twenty tracks on this cd and "On An On", I found 19 to be strong, original, emotive and worthy of multiple listens (and the 20th song was still pretty decent!). Here's hoping Syd Arthur continues in this vein of drawing inspiration from great literature and music.
